Bipolar Spectrum Disorder (BSD)

Overview

Bipolar Spectrum Disorder (BSD) is a mood disorder characterized by recurring episodes of elevated mood (mania or hypomania), often alternating with periods of depression. To meet diagnostic criteria, a hypomanic episode must last at least four days, or a full manic episode at least one week (unless hospitalization is required), alongside depressive episodes of at least two weeks. These mood swings cause significant impairment in work, relationships, or daily activities. Treatment typically blends psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle support.

Signs & Symptoms

Elevated or Irritable Mood: A noticeable period of feeling unusually high, euphoric, or easily agitated for several days.

Increased Energy or Activity: A sudden surge in activity levels, talking more than usual, or taking on numerous tasks at once.

Decreased Need for Sleep: Sleeping significantly less while still feeling rested or energized.

• Racing Thoughts or Flight of Ideas: Thoughts that jump quickly from topic to topic, making it hard to focus.

• Grandiosity or Inflated Self-Esteem: Unrealistic beliefs about one’s abilities, talents, or importance.

• Impulsivity and Risk-Taking: Engaging in reckless behavior such as excessive spending, risky driving, or unsafe sexual activity.

• Depressive Symptoms: Periods of sadness, low energy, loss of interest, appetite or sleep changes, and feelings of worthlessness.

• Mixed Features: Simultaneous symptoms of mania and depression, such as feeling restless and energized while also hopeless or tearful.

When to Seek Help

If you notice distinct periods of unusually high energy or irritability alternating with deep lows—and these swings disrupt your job, relationships, or safety (for instance, leading to impulsive behavior or suicidal thoughts)—it’s important to seek professional evaluation right away. Early intervention can help prevent severe mood episodes and improve long‑term stability.

Treatment Approaches

1. Evaluate & Diagnose

2. Prescribe & Monitor Medication

3. Provide or Coordinate Psychotherapy

Coordinate Ongoing Care

Medications often begin to stabilize mood within 1–3 weeks, though full therapeutic effects and optimal dosing may take longer. Psychotherapy helps you recognize early warning signs, maintain regular daily rhythms, and prevent relapse.
